Handcrafted Italian floor: traditional but very actual
Artisan terracotta floors are one of the elements that characterize Italy in the world: that is why the market of cotto is so active also outside the national borders, even if the competition is not always “transparent” on the rules and procedures of preparation of the exported material, often creating artifacts of low quality that are paid less (and that does not worth a dime), creating confusion about the true quality of the handmade terracotta and of the artisan terracotta floors.
In the end, why choose Italian bricks rather than others from other Countries? The answer is pretty simple, and lies in the quality and modes of production, in the resistance to stress and in the test results of frost resistance.
The comparison between the bricks produced in Italy in the traditional way and other foreign products can begin simply by an aesthetic point of view: there is no comparison between the material extracted from the quarries of excellent quality with controls on the composition of the clay and “dusting” (as is called the elimination of debris in the jargon), which is worked by hand and left to dry for the right time before being skimmed again and placed on the market, with “soulless” tiles coming from abroad.
For a more practical comparison, we can beat together two Italian tiles (we use to beat each other the bricks because from the sound they make you can have a first idea regarding their resistance) or two imported tiles that risk of breaking down at first impact.
Then there are more technical tests that you can perform: the one about the cold resistance and the one about the load resistance.
That said, obviously the choice is up to you: low price for low quality or fair price for excellent quality. We are confident, however, that you are already a purist if you are going to select a artisan terracotta floor: the choice of such a solution rather than that of an industrial floor says a lot about your idea of beauty and quality!
